If the Subaru had been a single millimeter to the left, Shailene wouldn’t have been thrown off her bicycle, nicking her axillary artery. Meaning she wouldn’t have been technically dead until the EMTs arrived. Which allowed Shailene to briefly communicate with her mom, who’d passed away six years prior. Which is when Shailene’s mom revealed she hadn’t fallen asleep in that tub, but been murdered by Shailene’s father. Which Shailene knew for a fact was wrong, since she herself had held her mom’s head underwater until the bubbles ceased. Which is when Shailene realized: Even ghosts can lie to themselves.
