As far as anyone knew, the race had been going on forever. The current engineers, drivers, and support staff of each vehicle knew if they stopped now, all the generations’ struggles before them would’ve been pointless. The vehicles were nuclear-powered and had never sunk below 100 mph, ever. Food was secured by snagging bundles at speed, while water was harvested from sails catching the vapor they passed through. No team knew whether they were winning or losing—they may have lapped others or been lapped many times. All that mattered is that each team kept going, and that, someday, they won.
