Can you imagine loving something so much—not a pet or a principle or a person, but a THING—you’d die for it? Go ahead, think. A diamond? A photo? A beloved book? A favorite piece of jewelry or clothing? Grandmama’s meatloaf recipe? I’d argue no, such sacrifice is incompatible with any human value system. So I can’t explain why I’m protecting this ratty, stuffed toy dragon with my life, except that it was my son’s. Plus there’s the code sewn inside it, which I really can’t let you have. So we’re going to fight now; you already know how it ends.
