Insignificant

It’s almost unimaginable how unimportant you are. Among 8 billion people now—120 billion over the earth’s history—you’re literally incapable of understanding your lack of influence. Even if you lead, or employ, or are worshiped by millions of people—in the grand scheme of things, you’ll be gone in milliseconds, as will they. Even if you helped sire them, even if they live in an edifice you helped build, what are the odds they’ll remember your name? Still, none of this alters the fact that you’re important to me, right now; if anything, your tremendous insignificance increases the weight of that mattering.
