At first it was just little creatures, spiders and wasps, turning up flattened in young Emlin’s room. Not from a swat or a squish, but from his mind. By the time Emlin was 10, he had progressed to rats, skunks, the most intimidating neighborhood dogs. At 17, his first human—Father Kelly, the chemistry teacher at Holy Mary Catholic High. Not because of what the Father was doing to any students, but what he’d thought about doing. Our concern was much too late; Emlin was already somewhere out there, righteously patrolling everyone's thoughts. He wouldn't stop until the world was pure.
